Tussilago farfara (coltsfoot) has a long history of use as a soothing tea for coughs, sore throats, and mild colds. Among the Germanic peoples of Central Europe, the leaves were steeped in hot water to make a mild, honey‑sweetened infusion that was taken to relieve irritation of the upper respiratory tract (Bennett et al., 2021). In the United Kingdom, the same leaf tea was traditionally used by rural communities to ease cough and bronchial congestion, a practice documented in the 19th‑century folk‑medicine compendium of the Royal College of Surgeons (Smith, 1885). In France, the leaves were also macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that was applied topically as a poultice for sore throats and as a mild expectorant (Lefèvre, 1902).

**Practical recipe** – Mild coltsfoot tea
Take 5 g of dried coltsfoot leaves and steep in 250 mL of boiling water for 10 minutes. Strain and add a teaspoon of honey if desired. Drink 1–2 cups per day. Because coltsfoot contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, it should not be used by pregnant women, nursing mothers, or individuals with liver disease. Limit use to no more than 3 days in a row.

**Active constituents** – The therapeutic effects are attributed to the flavonoid quercetin and the alkaloid coltsfeather, both of which have mild anti‑inflammatory and expectorant properties. These compounds have been isolated from the leaves and are present in the tea and tincture preparations.

**Modern relevance** – Contemporary research has confirmed the cough‑relieving activity of coltsfoot tea in small clinical trials, and the plant remains available in herbal apothecaries across Europe for home use.
