Ethnobotanical Uses

In parts of southern and eastern India, especially among tribal groups in Manipur and related communities of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, warm or cool leaf decoctions are used to settle the gut in cases of dysentery and diarrhea, and decoctions of leaves or branches are taken for cough and cold; leaf pastes are also applied to insect bites, minor wounds, and certain skin conditions, while leaf ash is sometimes smeared on scabies lesions (Saravanan and Devi, 2009; Shukla et al., 2020). In Bangladesh, rural healers in Sylhet and Mymensingh have long prepared bark or leaf decoctions for acute diarrhea and dysentery, and both leaf and stem bark infusions are reported as astringent remedies for loose stools and colicky pains (Uddin and Sarker, 2012; Hossain and Rahman, 2019). In northern Myanmar, traditional practitioners note that leaf and twig decoctions are drunk to reduce diarrhea, while the crushed fresh leaf is used as a poultice for sores and wounds; this practice is captured in national ethnomedicinal inventories (Min et al., 2011; Moe et al., 2016).

A simple traditional diarrhea tea may be prepared by adding 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried leaf or a small, broken piece of dried bark to 1 cup of water, bringing it to a simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, and taking 1 cup 1 to 2 times daily until stools normalize; in some areas the bark preparation is preferred as the stronger astringent (Saravanan and Devi, 2009; Uddin and Sarker, 2012). While leaf and twig decoctions for colds and coughs are common, the taste is quite bitter and many practitioners advise limiting use to 3 to 5 days and avoiding concentrated bark decoctions in children, older adults, and people on anticoagulants because of limited safety data (Shukla et al., 2020).

Phytochemical studies of L. indica document tannins (gallotannins, ellagitannins), flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol and their glycosides, hydrolyzable derivatives such as punicalagin, phenolic acids (gallic, ellagic, caffeic, ferulic), and the triterpenoids ursolic and oleanolic acids; these astringent and antimicrobial compounds plausibly underpin the traditional gut and skin applications (Wang et al., 2012; Shukla et al., 2020).

Beyond small-scale traditional use, extracts are examined today for antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antidiarrheal activity, and certain cultivars remain widely grown as ornamentals; as a result, both fresh leaves for quick poultices and dried bark or leaves for decoctions are available from village markets in parts of South Asia and through online ethnobotanical suppliers, though batch quality and identification should always be verified.

General Uses Top

Common products:
- Ornamental horticulture: cultivated worldwide as a landscape tree or shrub in public parks, street medians, and private gardens; marketed by nurseries in a broad range of cultivars for foliage and flower display.
- Cut‑flower and floral arrangements: the long, terminal inflorescences of *Lagerstroemia indica* are harvested for fresh‑cut flower use in domestic and commercial arrangements.
- Bonsai: dwarf cultivars are selected and trained for bonsai cultivation.

Properties relevant to use:
- Fast vegetative growth and strong tolerance to pruning enable regular shaping and high‑volume nursery production.
- Extended flowering season (summer to early autumn) and a wide palette of flower colours (white, pink, red, purple) provide ornamental appeal that drives consumer demand.
- Moderate drought tolerance and adaptability to diverse soil types (well‑drained loams to sandy soils) reduce maintenance requirements in urban plantings.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Commercial propagation is primarily by vegetative cuttings, yielding genetically uniform cultivars and reducing pressure on wild populations.
- Production in major horticultural regions (United States, China, Mediterranean Europe) adheres to regional plant‑health regulations and certification schemes that limit pest and disease transmission.
- *Lagerstroemia indica* is not listed as threatened; cultivated stock supplies the ornamental market without significant impact on natural habitats.
