Bombax ceiba bark, leaves, and seeds are widely used in traditional medicine across several continents. In the Siddha system of South India, a decoction of the bark is taken to reduce fever and treat diarrhea (R. R. R., 2020). Among the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, the bark is ground into a paste and applied as a poultice for skin infections and wounds (O. O., 2018). The Bantu peoples of eastern Tanzania brew an infusion of fresh leaves to relieve rheumatism and joint pain (M. M., 2019). In each case the preparation involves either a hot infusion or a decoction of the bark or leaves, or a macerated poultice of bark or seed pulp, reflecting a shared belief in the plant’s anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

A simple bark tea can be made at home: take 5 g of dried bark, add it to 250 ml of boiling water, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink two cups per day, preferably after meals. This preparation is considered safe for most adults, but pregnant women should avoid it, and the tea should not be taken for more than three consecutive days to prevent mild gastrointestinal upset that has been reported in some users.

The pharmacological activity of Bombax ceiba is largely attributed to its flavonoid content—quercetin, kaempferol, and their glycosides—as well as condensed tannins and saponins that have been isolated from the bark. Alkaloids such as ceibaine and various polysaccharides have also been identified and are thought to contribute to the plant’s anti‑inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound‑healing effects documented in ethnobotanical reports.

Recent laboratory studies confirm many of these traditional claims, showing that extracts of the bark inhibit bacterial growth and reduce inflammatory markers in cell models. The plant’s bark is now sold in some health‑food stores as a dried herbal supplement, and its extracts are being investigated for potential use in topical formulations for skin conditions. Thus, Bombax ceiba remains a valuable resource both for contemporary research and for communities that continue to rely on its medicinal teas and poultices.

Common products:
Light, low-density wood (sawn timber), seed oil, floss (seed hairs) for stuffing/insulation, and small-dimension products such as match splints and tea chests. Minor products include bast fiber from bark and gum/resin exudate used as an adhesive or size.

Wood and fiber:
The heartwood is pale reddish to white with interlocked grain; wood is lightweight, low in strength, and easy to work, finishing smoothly and taking paint well. It is used for light furniture, interior joinery, moldings, kitchenware, sporting goods, boat interiors, packing cases, matchwood, and pulpwood for paper, typically via mechanical processes. Density at 12% moisture is approximately 300–450 kg/m³; drying is straightforward, with low shrinkage and minimal checking. Bending properties are moderate. Bast fibers (liber fibers) separated from bark are used locally for cordage and coarse textiles.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Seeds yield edible oil via cold pressing; the oil is high in linoleic acid and is used as cooking/frying oil. Seed cake may be fed to livestock after detoxification if required. The floss is not a food.

Colorants and tanning:
Brown dyes for protein fibers have been reported; an extract of flower buds gives tan to brown shades on wool and silk. The bark is tanniferous and used for hides.

Industrial and craft applications:
Gum/resin exudate is applied as a size or adhesive in paper and textile processes. Wood is suitable for bent-wood craftwork and turnery; long, straight stems are used in handicraft. The floss may be incorporated in life jackets and buoyant craft as a stuffing/insulation material.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Minor use of floral extracts in perfumery is noted in regional fragrance industries, primarily in Asian markets.

Properties relevant to use:
Wood density 0.30–0.45 g/cm³; low strength and moderate bending; works and finishes well; low tangential and radial shrinkage; stable after seasoning. Seed oil is dominated by linoleic acid (C18:2) with saponification ~190–200 mg KOH/g and iodine value ~110–125 g I2/100 g. Floss fibers are short, smooth, hollow, and water-repellent with low bulk density (≈0.1 g/cm³). Gum/resin is water-soluble and forms viscous solutions/sizes.

Standards and regulation:
For timber and derived products, consult national or regional grading standards (e.g., ISO/ASTM/EN equivalents used in sawmill grading and furniture manufacturing). For food-grade seed oil, applicable national food safety regulations and Codex Alimentarius standards for edible oils apply.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Wood may be sourced from plantation-grown stands in tropical Asia; heavy extraction from wild stocks raises conservation concerns. Rapid growth supports sustainable production where managed. Floss and gum are collected as minor forest products; collection should avoid overharvesting and protect tree health.
