Morinda citrifolia, commonly known as noni, has a long history of use as an infusion and decoction in many tropical cultures. Among the Māori of New Zealand, the dried fruit peel is boiled with water to produce a bitter tea that is taken for stomach upset and as a general tonic (Bennett et al., 2021). In the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica, the bark and leaves are macerated in alcohol to create a tincture that is applied topically for skin infections and used internally for fever and digestive complaints (Miller, 2018). West African communities in Sierra Leone use a decoction of the root and bark to treat malaria and as a febrifuge, a practice documented in the ethnobotanical survey of the Mende people (Kumar et al., 2019). These preparations are typically made by simmering the plant material in water for 20–30 minutes, then straining the liquid for consumption or topical use.

A simple and safe way to experience the traditional tea is to steep dried noni fruit peel. Weigh about 5 grams of dried peel and place it in a saucepan with 250 ml of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and drink the clear liquid. The tea can be taken up to three times daily, but it is advisable to limit intake to 30 ml per dose to avoid mild gastrointestinal upset. Pregnant women and individuals with a history of kidney stones should consult a healthcare professional before using noni tea, as the fruit contains oxalates that can contribute to stone formation.

The therapeutic effects of noni infusions are largely attributed to a range of well‑established phytochemicals that have been isolated from the plant. Iridoid glycosides such as shanzhiside and 7‑hydroxy‑6‑methyl‑5‑oxo‑2‑cyclohexenyl‑β‑D‑glucopyranoside are abundant in the fruit peel and are known for their anti‑inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties. Anthraquinones, including emodin and chrysophanol, are present in the bark and root and contribute to the plant’s antimicrobial activity. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, along with phenolic acids like gallic acid, provide antioxidant support that may underlie the traditional use of noni for general health and longevity. Alkaloids such as morindone have also been identified, though their role in the traditional preparations remains less clear.

Modern research continues to explore the health potential of Morinda citrifolia. Recent in‑vitro studies have confirmed anti‑viral activity against influenza and SARS‑CoV‑2, while animal models suggest anti‑diabetic and anti‑obesity effects. Commercially, noni extracts are available as dietary supplements, and the fruit is sold in juice form in many health‑food stores. Despite the growing scientific interest, the traditional infusion and decoction methods remain widely practiced in the communities that first cultivated this remarkable plant.
