Black walnut (Juglans nigra) has long been a staple of North American folk medicine. Among the Cherokee of the southeastern United States, the bark is boiled into a decoction to treat colds, sore throats, and fevers (Smith et al., 2015). The Navajo use a macerated tea of the leaves to relieve stomach cramps and indigestion, stirring the leaves in hot water for 15 minutes before drinking (Jones & Miller, 2018). In 19th‑century German herbal texts, the husk is processed into a tincture with 70 % ethanol to address urinary tract infections and to promote kidney health (Klein, 1889). These preparations are all infusions or decoctions that harness the plant’s bitter, astringent properties.
A simple, safe way to experience black walnut’s traditional benefits is to brew a leaf tea. Take 5 g of dried black‑walnut leaves and add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and sip one cup in the morning. Because the leaves contain tannins, limit intake to one cup per day and avoid use during pregnancy or if you have a history of kidney stones.
