Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) has a long history of use in folk medicine, especially in the leaves and seeds. Among the Nahua of central Mexico, a decoction of fresh leaves is brewed to treat urinary tract infections and kidney stones (González‑García et al., 2018). In the Yoruba communities of southwestern Nigeria, dried leaf powder is mixed with hot water to make a tea that is traditionally used for diarrhea and dysentery (Ogunleye et al., 2019). In northern India, the seeds are boiled in water to produce a decoction that is drunk to relieve urinary calculi and to support kidney function (Kumar et al., 2020). In some parts of the Caribbean, a poultice of crushed leaves is applied to skin lesions and insect bites to reduce inflammation and promote healing (Caribbean Herbal Compendium, 2017).
