Sedum sarmentosum, known in Chinese as “Xiaochang,” has a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine. Among the Han Chinese, dried leaves and stems are boiled into a decoction to treat skin infections and inflammatory rashes (Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2020). In Korea, the same plant is brewed as a light tea to relieve coughs and colds, with the leaves and young shoots used in a 1:10 water ratio (Kim et al., 2018). In Mongolia, the root and stem are macerated in water and applied as a poultice to reduce swelling and promote healing of minor wounds (Tsend et al., 2019). These preparations all rely on infusions or decoctions, underscoring the plant’s value as a topical and internal remedy across diverse cultures.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home: combine 5 g of dried Sedum sarmentosum leaves with 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and allow it to cool slightly before drinking. Consume up to two cups per day. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid this tea until more safety data are available, and individuals with known allergies to stonecrop species should exercise caution.

Phytochemical analyses of Sedum sarmentosum confirm the presence of several bioactive compounds that likely underpin its traditional uses. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol have been isolated from the leaves and are known for their anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Phenolic acids—including gallic acid and caffeic acid—contribute to the plant’s ability to scavenge free radicals.
