Tetradium ruticarpum, known in Chinese medicine as Wu Zhu Yu, is traditionally used as a decoction of its dried fruit to relieve abdominal pain, diarrhea, dysentery, and menstrual cramps. According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) the fruit is boiled for 15–20 minutes and the liquid is drunk in small doses; the same preparation is cited in Korean Kampo practice by Kim et al. (2018) for treating dyspepsia and in Japanese Kampo by Yamada et al. (2019) for abdominal discomfort. In all three cultures the dried fruit is the sole material used, and the decoction is sometimes combined with other herbs in a poultice for external application to the lower abdomen.

A simple, safe recipe is a 5‑gram decoction: add 5 g of dried fruit to 250 ml of boiling water, simmer for 10 minutes, strain, and drink 1–2 cups per day. Limit the dose to 10 g per day to avoid nausea; pregnant women should avoid the herb, and it may interact with antiplatelet drugs. The decoction can be taken after meals for best absorption.

Phytochemical analysis of the fruit shows that evodiamine, rutaecarpine, and evodiamic acid are the major alkaloids responsible for its antispasmodic and anti‑inflammatory effects. These constituents have been linked to the traditional relief of gastrointestinal spasms and to the reduction of menstrual pain.

Modern research continues to explore Tetradium ruticarpum’s bioactivity. Recent in‑vitro studies confirm its anti‑inflammatory and anticancer potential, and the dried fruit is now available as a commercial herbal supplement in health‑food stores, keeping the plant’s traditional uses alive in contemporary wellness practices.

Its scent derives mainly from monoterpene hydrocarbons that give a fresh, bright character suitable for top‑note applications.

Properties relevant to use:
- Chemical composition is dominated by limonene (≈30 % of the oil), α‑pinene, β‑pinene, sabinene, myrcene and minor amounts of linalool and other sesquiterpenes (Zhang et al., 2015). The oil is a clear, pale yellow liquid with a typical density of 0.84–0.86 g cm⁻³, refractive index 1.47–1.48 and a flash point above 60 °C. These physical parameters facilitate incorporation into fragrance formulations and allow safe handling under standard industrial conditions.

Standards and regulation:
- The oil is subject to the general essential‑oil specification ISO 11014‑2, which sets limits on component concentrations and defines labeling requirements. Use in perfumery must comply with the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) Guidelines and with European Union cosmetic regulation (EC No 1223/2009) for ingredient safety and labeling of cosmetic products.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Tetradium ruticarpum is native to southern China (Yunnan and Sichuan provinces). Commercial supply relies on wild‑harvested leaves, and the species is not widely cultivated. No global conservation assessment exists, but local populations appear stable; sustainable harvesting practices, including regulated collection and promotion of small‑scale cultivation, are recommended to maintain resource availability and minimise ecological impact.
