Ethnobotanical records from three distinct cultural zones describe distinct uses of Cedrela salvadorensis that involve infusions, decoctions, macerations or poultices. Among the Lenca of western Honduras, a hot water decoction of the inner bark is taken as a fever‑reducing tea; the preparation is described in detail by Allen and Nelson (1995), who note that the bark is harvested from mature trees and boiled for 30 minutes before drinking. In the Maya communities of the Petén lowlands of Guatemala, fresh leaf material is steeped in cold water to make a mild tea that is reputed to relieve stomach cramps and dyspepsia; McKeever (1999) records the leaf‑infusion as a common household remedy. Finally, healers among the Mestizo population of central El Salvador use a poultice made from macerated bark applied directly to wounds and insect bites, a practice reported by Estrada (2012) in her ethnobotanical survey of Salvadoran medicinal plants.

One practical recipe that captures the most widely reported preparation is a bark decoction used as an antipyretic. Dried inner bark (approximately 10 g, finely chopped) is added to 500 ml of water, the mixture is brought to a gentle boil, and then simmered for 20–30 minutes. The liquid is strained and taken warm, up to one cup three times a day for no more than three consecutive days. Because the bark contains high concentrations of limonoids, the preparation should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and it is not recommended for children under twelve without professional supervision; excessive doses may stress the liver.

Phytochemical work on Cedrela salvadorensis has identified a suite of limonoids—gedunin, swietenolide and cedrelone—as well as the coumarin scopoletin and several sesquiterpene hydrocarbons in both bark and leaves (Rodríguez et al., 2007). These compounds are well‑documented for anti‑inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic activity in related Cedrela species, providing a plausible biochemical basis for the traditional fever‑reducing and gastrointestinal‑soothing uses.

Although scientific validation of the traditional claims is still emerging, interest in the species is growing: recent in‑vitro studies have confirmed anti‑pyretic effects of extracts containing gedunin, while local markets in Honduras continue to sell bundles of dried bark for home decoctions. Ongoing pharmacological research aims to isolate and evaluate the active limonoids for potential drug development, keeping the plant at the intersection of cultural practice and modern science.

Common products:
Cedrela salvadorensis is harvested primarily as sawn timber. The wood is marketed as light construction lumber, furniture stock, and interior trim. Small‑diameter logs are processed into veneer for plywood and laminated veneer lumber, while larger logs are used for solid‑wood panels and cabinet doors. Wood chips from the sawmilling process are a feedstock for pulp and paper production.

Industrial and craft applications:
The species is widely used in the manufacture of plywood, particleboard, and medium‑density fiberboard (MDF). Its straight grain and low resin content make it suitable for precision cutting and fine woodworking, including musical instrument components, decorative panels, and custom joinery. The timber also serves as a base for engineered wood products such as cross‑laminated timber (CLT) where mechanical performance permits.

Wood and fiber:
The heartwood is light reddish‑brown to pink with a fine, even grain, while the sapwood is pale and less durable. Solid wood is employed for flooring, doors, window frames, and high‑quality furniture. The fiber fraction, obtained after de‑barking and chipping, provides cellulose for kraft pulping, contributing to paper grades ranging from newsprint to higher‑quality writing paper.

Properties relevant to use:
Typical air‑dry density ranges from 0.45 to 0.55 g cm⁻³, giving the wood a moderate strength‑to‑weight ratio. It exhibits low shrinkage and good dimensional stability after kiln drying. The wood contains approximately 27 % lignin and 44 % cellulose (dry weight), a composition conducive to efficient delignification in kraft pulping. Natural durability is moderate; the wood is susceptible to termite and fungal attack, which limits outdoor applications unless treated. Machinability is high, with low tool wear and good surface finish.

Standards and regulation:
International trade of Cedrela salvadorensis is subject to national timber export regulations, and where related Cedrela species are listed under CITES, export may require a CITES permit. Major importing jurisdictions, such as the United States under the Lacey Act and the European Union under the Timber Regulation, require documentation that the wood was harvested legally. Pulp and paper standards such as ISO 2470 (pulp brightness) and ISO 17088 (sustainability criteria for timber products) are applied to wood‑based inputs.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Wild populations have declined due to habitat loss and selective logging. Plantation‑grown Cedrela salvadorensis is increasingly cultivated to supply timber, with trees typically reaching merchantable size within a 12–15 year rotation period for Cedrela spp. Certification schemes such as FSC and PEFC are used to verify that timber originates from responsibly managed forests, helping to reduce pressure on natural stands and support long‑term supply.
