Machilus japonica—commonly called tabunoki—is employed in teas, poultices and macerated tonics in parts of its native range. In central Japan, people have steeped young leaves for a refreshing beverage (Gurung, 2020). On Ryukyu islands and in parts of Kyushu, the bark has been boiled in water for “steam baths” to ease colds (Matsumoto, 2021), while the same bark decoction is used as a wash for bruises (Berberian, 2022). Among communities in northern Taiwan, crushed leaves are applied as poultices to wounds, and leaves are also infused for fevers (Bennett et al., 2021). In Iriomote Island (southern Ryukyus), the fragrant foliage is brewed as an after‑tea (Park & Jiao, 2019).

A practical leaf infusion can be prepared by rinsing 3–5 young leaves, placing them in 250–300 mL of just‑boiled water, and infusing, covered, for 4–6 minutes before sipping. This light tea is traditionally taken after meals and is not used by expectant parents or on large open wounds.

Machilus japonica leaves and bark carry camphor and cineole, giving the plant its characteristic camphoraceous aroma. These constituents are established for the genus and plausibly underlie its mild respiratory and topical effects.

Clinical research on Machilus japonica remains limited, but decoctions and macerations continue to be prepared by local vendors and households, and interest is rising in Japanese and Ryukyu ethnobotanical surveys.
