C. maxima is one of the oldest domesticated species, with evidence of its cultivation dating back over 4,000 years ago. It is believed to have originated in South America, specifically in northern Argentina near the Andes or in certain Andean valleys. From there, it was introduced into North America as early as the 16th century and was widely cultivated by Native American tribes by the time of the American Revolution. By the early 19th century, at least three varieties had been commercially introduced in North America from seeds obtained from Native Americans.
Today, C. maxima is still widely cultivated and has a variety of uses. Its fruits, which come in a range of shapes, sizes, and colors, are used for cooking and decoration. The seeds of C. maxima are also used in traditional medicine to treat parasites in animals. However, its cultivation is limited to areas with hot summers, making it less popular in northern Europe and the British Isles.
