Cucurbita maxima, the winter squash or pumpkin, appears in folk pharmacopeias of South‑Asia, the Andes, and Mesoamerica. In the Tamang villages of Nepal, dried leaves are steeped in hot water for a mild diuretic tea (Sharma & Bhatta, 2015). Andean Quechua healers brew a short infusion of fresh leaves to ease urinary discomfort (Gómez, 2015). In the Mexican highlands, ground seeds are boiled for 20 minutes in a decoction taken to expel intestinal parasites (Rodríguez & García, 2018). In Brazil’s Cerrado, seeds are macerated in oil for several weeks and applied as a poultice on skin wounds (Santos & Lobo, 2017).

Each preparation follows a straightforward protocol. The Nepali tea uses roughly 10 g of sun‑dried leaves per 500 mL water, heated to just under boiling and steeped 5–8 minutes before straining. The Andean leaf infusion uses 8 g of fresh leaves in a cup of hot water, covered for three minutes. The Mexican seed decoction mixes 30 g of roasted seeds (ground fine) with 1 L water, boiled for 20 minutes, and the liquid is consumed in three doses. The Brazilian seed‑oil maceration soaks 200 g of shelled seeds in 500 mL of cold‑pressed sesame oil for 30 days in darkness, then filters and applies the oil as a warm compress.

To prepare the Nepali leaf tea at home, combine 10 g of dried C. maxima leaves with 500 mL of water that has just boiled (≈90 °C). Cover and steep 5 minutes, then strain through a fine mesh. Drink the infusion while warm, up to three times daily for mild diuretic support. Safety note: individuals allergic to pumpkin or other Cucurbitaceae should avoid this tea; pregnant or nursing women should consult a health professional before use, as comprehensive safety data are lacking.

The therapeutic actions of C. maxima are linked to a well‑characterised phytochemical profile. Seeds contain high levels of unsaturated fatty acids (linoleic and oleic acids), phytosterols such as β‑sitosterol, and the non‑protein amino acid cucurbitin, which together account for the anti‑inflammatory and nematocidal properties recorded in traditional practice. Leaves are rich in flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol) and phenolic acids (caffeic, ferulic) that provide antioxidant activity. Modern studies confirm antioxidant and antihyperglycemic effects of leaf extracts (Kumar et al., 2020) and anti‑inflammatory activity of seed‑oil fractions (Silva et al., 2022). Commercial pumpkin‑seed oil is now marketed worldwide, and dried leaf‑tea bags appear in Nepali and Indian herbal shops, while many rural communities continue the same simple infusions and decoctions that have been used for generations.

General Uses Top

Common products:
Cucurbita maxima is cultivated primarily for its mature fruits used as food (commonly marketed as winter squash, e.g., Kabocha, Buttercup, Hubbard types). The fruits are also processed into puree, pulp, and dried products used as ingredients by food manufacturers and bakers. Seeds are used whole or decorticated for snacks and are pressed to produce a pale yellow seed oil.

Industrial and craft applications:
The principal industrial product is the food ingredient (fruit puree/pulp) used in soups, sauces, fillings, and bakery applications. Seed oil is produced by mechanical pressing for food use; no documented non-food industrial applications of seed oil or fruit by-products are established for this taxon.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
There are no documented fragrance, cosmetic, or personal-care applications for C. maxima fruit or seed components reported in the referenced literature.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Mature fruits are consumed fresh, roasted, baked, or steamed and as an ingredient in manufactured foods. Edible seed oil is used for culinary purposes; seeds and decorticated seeds are consumed as snacks or incorporated into prepared foods.

Properties relevant to use:
Fruit tissue is characterized by high starch content and relatively low moisture, yielding a dense, dry flesh suitable for roasting and pureeing. Seed oil is edible with typical fatty-acid composition for Cucurbita seed oils (predominantly linoleic and oleic acids). These compositional traits underpin suitability for food applications and oil extraction.

Scientific/model-organism use:
Cucurbita maxima serves as a model in Cucurbitaceae genetics. Reference genomes and community resources are maintained and distributed through major genomic repositories (e.g., the DOE JGI and Phytozome), with disease-resistance research networks providing standardized protocols and breeding germplasm. It is used in molecular biology, linkage mapping, and comparative genomics within the family.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Production is global, with international breeding and germplasm conservation. No taxon-specific sustainability or regulatory frameworks are documented beyond general food safety and seed-oil standards in national jurisdictions.
