Persicaria hydropiper, commonly called water pepper, has a long record of use in several traditional medicine systems. Among the Han Chinese, Liu et al., 2018 describe a decoction of the dried leaves that is taken to relieve stomach pain and abdominal distension. In Korean traditional medicine, Kim et al., 2017 report that a tincture made from the fresh stems is used as a mild stomachic and to treat diarrhea. European folk healers, as documented by Smith et al., 2015, have applied a poultice of crushed leaves to cuts and bruises to reduce inflammation and promote healing.
