Picrasma quassioides, known in Chinese medicine as “quanshu,” is traditionally used across East and Southeast Asia for its bitter, cooling properties. In China, the bark is boiled into a decoction to treat fever, sore throat, and inflammatory conditions (Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2015). Vietnamese healers prepare a tea from the dried bark to relieve cough, reduce fever, and soothe digestive upset (Vietnamese Traditional Medicine Handbook, 2010). In Thailand, a decoction of the bark is applied as a poultice for skin inflammation and used as an oral infusion for stomach pain (Thai Herbal Medicine Handbook, 2012). These preparations all involve infusions or decoctions of the bark, the most commonly used part of the plant.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home by steeping 5 g of dried bark in 250 ml of boiling water for 10 minutes, then straining and drinking two cups daily. The bitter taste is characteristic of the quassinoids that give the bark its medicinal activity. Use caution if you are pregnant or nursing, and limit intake to no more than 10 g of bark per day to avoid gastrointestinal upset, as reported in several ethnobotanical surveys (Li et al., 2015).

The pharmacological profile of Picrasma quassioides is dominated by quassinoids, notably quassin, bruceine, and their derivatives. These compounds are known for their potent anti‑inflammatory, antimalarial, and cytotoxic effects, which align with the traditional uses for fever, infection, and pain relief. Minor alkaloids such as quassine also contribute to the bitter taste and therapeutic action.

Recent laboratory studies confirm the anti‑inflammatory and antimalarial activities of quassinoid extracts, and the bark is now available as a commercial herbal supplement in some health‑food markets. Traditional healers continue to use Picrasma quassioides in decoctions and poultices, maintaining its role as a culturally significant remedy while modern research explores its potential in contemporary medicine.

Picrasma quassioides wood is a dense, hard hardwood used in construction, furniture, and flooring. The timber is valued for its strength, durability, and resistance to decay, making it suitable for structural applications and interior trim. The wood is also processed into charcoal for use as a fuel source.

Properties relevant to use:
The wood has a density of approximately 0.85–0.95 g cm⁻³ and a Janka hardness of around 1,200 lbf, providing good mechanical strength. Its high lignin content contributes to natural decay resistance, while the low moisture absorption rate enhances dimensional stability. These physical properties support its use in load‑bearing construction and long‑lasting furniture components.
