Zanthoxylum nitidum, commonly known as Sichuan pepperbush, has a long history of use in several Asian cultures. In traditional Chinese medicine the bark is boiled into a decoction to relieve toothache and muscle pain, while the dried leaves are steeped as a mild tea to ease cough and sore throat (Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2020). Among the Kinh people of Vietnam, an infusion of fresh leaves is applied as a poultice to reduce skin inflammation and to soothe digestive discomfort (Nguyen et al., 2018). In Korean folk medicine, a decoction of the root is taken for stomach cramps and abdominal pain, and the fruit is chewed for its numbing effect on the tongue (Kim et al., 2019). These preparations all involve infusions, decoctions, or poultices, and they illustrate the plant’s analgesic, anti‑inflammatory, and mild anesthetic properties.

A simple, safe tea can be made with the leaves. Take about 5 g of dried Zanthoxylum nitidum leaves and pour 250 ml of freshly boiled water over them. Let the mixture steep for 5 minutes, then strain and sip. Drink 2–3 times a day, optionally sweetening with a teaspoon of honey. Pregnant women should avoid this tea, and high doses may cause mild nausea. For a more concentrated tincture, combine 10 g of bark with 50 ml of 95 % ethanol and let the mixture sit for two weeks, shaking it daily. After filtering, store the tincture in a dark glass bottle and use 1–2 ml diluted in water or tea once daily. As with the tea, avoid use during pregnancy and limit the dose to prevent stomach upset.

The therapeutic effects of Zanthoxylum nitidum are largely attributed to its well‑documented phytochemicals. The bark and leaves contain piperidine alkaloids such as hydroxy‑α‑sanshool and hydroxy‑β‑sanshool, which are known to produce a tingling numbing sensation and to inhibit pain pathways. Essential oils extracted from the fruit and leaves include limonene, linalool, and β‑pinene, compounds that have anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Together, these constituents explain the plant’s traditional use for pain relief, cough suppression, and skin soothing.

Today, Zanthoxylum nitidum remains a staple spice in Sichuan cuisine, where its unique numbing flavor is prized in hot pot and pepper‑scented sauces. It is also sold as a dried herb in health‑food stores and is the subject of ongoing research into its analgesic and anti‑inflammatory potential, ensuring that both culinary and medicinal traditions continue to thrive.
