Malva sylvestris, the common mallow, has long been used in folk medicine as a soothing infusion and topical remedy. Among the people of the Mediterranean basin, Smith and Jones, 2018 describe a mild tea made from the dried leaves to relieve sore throats and coughs, while the same preparation is used as a poultice for minor skin irritations. In Turkey, Yilmaz and Korkmaz, 2017 report that the leaves are steeped in hot water to treat bronchial congestion and are also macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture for cough and colds. In India, Sharma and Patel, 2019 note that the leaves are decocted and the resulting liquid is drunk to ease respiratory ailments and to soothe digestive upset.
