Persea americana leaves have long been used by several indigenous groups as a medicinal infusion or topical poultice. Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Bennett et al., 2021 report that a mild tea of fresh leaves is drunk to relieve stomach cramps and mild fevers, while a decoction of the same material is applied to inflamed joints. In central Mexico, the Nahua people prepare a decoction of dried leaves to treat diarrhea and abdominal pain, as documented by García et al., 2019. In southwestern Nigeria, the Yoruba use a poultice made from crushed avocado leaves to soothe skin wounds and reduce swelling, a practice noted by Okafor et al., 2018.
