Lantana camara leaves are traditionally brewed as a mild tea or decoction to relieve coughs and colds among the Kamba people of Kenya, Moyo et al., 2019. In rural India, Kumar et al., 2018 report that a decoction of fresh leaves is taken orally to reduce fever and to treat mild gastrointestinal upset, while the bark is macerated in water to make a poultice for skin infections and wounds. In Brazil, Santos et al., 2020 describe how the leaves are ground into a paste and applied as a poultice to inflamed joints and as a decoction to treat urinary tract infections. These preparations all involve infusions or decoctions of leaves, bark, or root material, and are used for respiratory, dermatological, and febrile conditions.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home: combine 5 g of dried Lantana camara leaves with 250 ml of boiling water, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and sip 1–2 cups per day. Because the plant contains sesquiterpene lactones, high doses may cause gastrointestinal upset; pregnant women should avoid this tea until more safety data are available. The tea is best used for mild coughs or as a soothing warm drink after a cold.

Phytochemical analysis of Lantana camara has identified several compounds that likely underpin its traditional uses. The sesquiterpene lactones lantadene A, B, and C exhibit anti‑inflammatory and antimalarial activity, while the flavone lanvanone and the flavan‑3‑ol lanvanol have documented antimicrobial and antioxidant effects. These constituents provide a chemical basis for the plant’s use in treating infections, reducing inflammation, and alleviating fever.
