Vaccinium corymbosum, also known as the northern highbush blueberry, is a North American species of blueberry that has become a significant food crop. It is native to eastern Canada and the eastern and southern United States, but has also been naturalized in other parts of the world. This deciduous shrub grows up to 12 feet tall and has dark green leaves that turn vibrant colors in the fall. Its bell-shaped flowers are followed by small blue-black berries that are a food source for birds and animals. The plant has a long history of cultivation by Native Americans and was later domesticated in 1908. It is now the most commonly grown blueberry in North America and is also used as an ornamental plant. There are many cultivars of Vaccinium corymbosum, including some that have been hybridized with other species for cultivation in warmer regions.
