Subfamily Vaccinioideae in Family Ericaceae
What is a Subfamily (pl. Subfamilies)?
In the context of botanical taxonomy, the Subfamily rank is a taxonomic rank that
is used to classify groups of
related genera within a Family. Subfamilies are based on a set of shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic
characteristics, such as flower structure, fruit type, and leaf morphology, which are different from those of
other groups within the same Family. The Subfamily rank is situated between Family and Tribe in the hierarchy of
taxonomic ranks.
Each Subfamily can include one or more tribes, and each tribe can include one or more genera. Subfamilies are used to group tribes of plants that share common traits and evolutionary histories, allowing botanists to better understand the relationships between different groups of plants within a Family.
