Ethnobotanical uses of Salacia lehmbachii are most thoroughly documented in West Africa, particularly among peoples of southeastern Nigeria and adjacent parts of Cameroon and Ghana. Among the Banyu of southeastern Nigeria, dried root bark is reduced to coarse chips and macerated in strong palm wine or a water–ethanol blend to produce a bitter “hot drink” used to treat fevers, malaria-like aches, and stomach complaints; local practitioners select well-aged bark for this preparation (Okwu et al., 2003; Addae-Mensah & Sanders, 1985). In Ghana’s coastal lowlands, healers prepare a tea from fresh or dried leaves by decocting a handful of leaves in water for 10–15 minutes; the resulting leaf tea is taken to ease abdominal colic and “biliousness,” sometimes followed by a light meal (Asase et al., 2010; Addae-Mensah & Sanders, 1985). In the Cameroonian highlands, traditional practitioners make a leaf poultice by crushing fresh leaves and applying the moist mass to swollen joints or skin infections; the poultice is changed twice daily (De Jong et al., 2011). Across these regions the bitterness—often noted by users—is a clear reminder of the plant’s active constituents.
To translate these practices for home use, a simple tincture that parallels the Nigerian root maceration can be prepared with readily available materials. Roughly chop 50 g of dried root bark and place in a clean jar; add 250 mL of 45% ethanol (e.g., vodka). Seal, keep in a cool, dark place, and shake daily. Macerate for 4–6 weeks, then strain through fine cloth and bottle the liquid in a dark amber bottle. A typical dose is 10–20 drops in water two or three times daily with meals. Use cautiously in people taking antidiabetic or antihypertensive medicines; avoid in pregnancy and for children under 12. If you have diabetes or are on prescription medications, consult a qualified healthcare professional before use (Okwu et al., 2003; Addae-Mensah & Sanders, 1985).
Modern analyses of African Salacia species—including material identified as Salacia lehmbachii—show consistent profiles of thiosugar sulfoniums (e.g., salacinol), polyphenols including catechins, proanthocyanidins, and gallic acid, as well as the xanthone mangiferin (Kusano et al., 1999; Okoye et al., 2013; Popoola et al., 2013). These compounds plausibly underlie the traditional applications for gastrointestinal upset and fever, and the thiosugar inhibitors are known alpha‑glucosidase inhibitors that help moderate postprandial glucose excursions.
In contemporary practice, several African preparations continue to be used in rural clinics and markets, and Salacia extracts are now commercially available in supplement stores, often marketed for postprandial metabolic support. Research on Salacia thiosugars and mangiferin continues in human trials and mechanistic studies, aligning traditional fevers and GI remedies with modern interest in glucose‑modulating botanicals (Kusano et al., 1999; Okoye et al., 2013; Popoola et al., 2013).
