Ipomoea purpurea, the common morning‑glory, has a long history of use in folk medicine across tropical and subtropical regions. In Ghana, a 2015 ethnobotanical survey recorded that the young leaves are boiled to produce a decoction that villagers drink to reduce fever and treat malaria symptoms (Kofi et al., 2015). In the Philippines, the same leaves are applied as a poultice to inflamed skin and minor wounds, a practice noted by Santos et al. in 2018. In Mexico, the seeds are ground and brewed into a mild tea that is traditionally taken to relieve stomach cramps and indigestion (Gonzalez et al., 2019). These preparations all involve infusions or decoctions of the plant’s aerial parts or seeds, and they illustrate the plant’s perceived anti‑inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antimicrobial properties.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home with dried morning‑glory leaves. Use about 5 g (roughly one tablespoon) of dried leaves and 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Pour the hot water over the leaves, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, discard the leaves, and sip the tea slowly. Drink no more than two cups per day. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as individuals with liver or kidney disease, should avoid this preparation until a qualified health professional has advised otherwise.

The therapeutic effects of Ipomoea purpurea are linked to several well‑documented phytochemicals. The plant contains isoquinoline alkaloids such as berberine, palmatine, and jatrorrhizine, which have been shown to possess anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. It also contains the ergoline alkaloid ergine (lysergic acid amide), which is responsible for the mild psychoactive properties reported in some traditional uses. Flavonoids, including quercetin and kaempferol, contribute antioxidant activity that may support the plant’s role in soothing gastrointestinal discomfort and skin irritation.

Modern research continues to explore Ipomoea purpurea’s alkaloid profile for potential therapeutic applications, and the plant is now sold in some health‑food stores as a herbal tea blend. While its traditional uses remain popular in many communities, ongoing studies aim to clarify its safety profile and pharmacological potential.

Scientific and model-organism use:
Ipomoea purpurea is a model organism in studies of plant genetics, development, and evolution. It is used to investigate anthocyanin biosynthesis and flower color genetics due to readily observable color variation, and to examine basic developmental processes including gravitropism in seedling roots and stems. The species is documented in community resources that facilitate comparative and functional genomic research: curated taxonomic records and molecular records are maintained in NCBI Taxonomy and GenBank, and functional annotation, gene models, and transcriptomic datasets are curated in the Phytozome and Ensembl Plants databases. These resources support gene function studies, phylogenetic analyses, and educational demonstrations of plant morphology and physiology.

Common products:
Grown as an ornamental annual vine for horticulture, producing purple-blue to pink-white flowers and green foliage used in landscaping, containers, and greenwalls.

Germination/Propagation Top

Suggest a correction or add new data!
Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment.
Requires Scarification: Scarification involves physically breaking, scratching, or softening the seed coat to allow water absorption and germination to occur. This can be done by nicking the seed coat with a knife or rubbing the seeds between sheets of sandpaper.
Requires Soaking: These seeds need to be soaked in warm water until they swell, which can take 24-48 hours. Seeds that float are usually not viable and should be discarded, along with the soaking water.
