Eurycoma longifolia, commonly known as Tongkat Ali, has been used for centuries in Southeast Asia as a tonic for vitality and sexual health. Among the Malay of Peninsular Malaysia, the root is boiled into a decoction and drunk to treat fatigue, fever, and erectile dysfunction (Bennett et al., 2021). In Java, the Javanese traditionally macerate dried root pieces in water to produce a mild tea that is consumed after meals to aid digestion and boost stamina (Suryani et al., 2019). In Northern Thailand, the local hill tribes prepare a tincture by steeping fresh root in alcohol for several weeks, using the liquid as a remedy for chronic aches and to enhance libido (Chaiyaporn et al., 2020). These preparations are typically made from the root, the most pharmacologically active part, and are consumed as infusions, decoctions, or tinctures rather than as poultices.

A simple, safe decoction can be made at home: take 10 g of dried, powdered root and add it to 500 ml of boiling water. Let the mixture simmer for 30 minutes, then strain and allow it to cool to a drinkable temperature. Consume one cup (≈250 ml) in the morning or evening. This dose is well within the range used in traditional practice and is unlikely to cause adverse effects in healthy adults. However, pregnant or nursing women should avoid it, and individuals with insomnia or anxiety should limit intake to the early part of the day, as the root can have mild stimulant properties.

The therapeutic effects of Tongkat Ali are largely attributed to its quassinoid alkaloids, especially eurycomanone and eurycomalactone, which have been isolated from the root and shown to influence testosterone metabolism and nitric‑oxide production. Other constituents such as β‑sitosterol, stigmasterol, and various flavonoids contribute to its anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant activities, providing a biochemical basis for the traditional claims of increased vigor and improved sexual function.

Contemporary research continues to explore Tongkat Ali’s potential as an aphrodisiac, anti‑cancer agent, and immune modulator, and the root is now available in standardized extracts and supplements worldwide. Its enduring use in traditional medicine underscores its cultural significance and offers a bridge between ancestral knowledge and modern pharmacology.
