Dodonaea viscosa, commonly called hop bush, has a long record of use by indigenous peoples of Australia, South Africa, and the Caribbean for treating skin irritations, fevers, and respiratory complaints. Among the Wajarri of Western Australia, the leaves and bark were boiled into a decoction to relieve cough and chest pain, a practice documented by Smith et al., 2015. In the Eastern Cape, the San people macerated fresh leaves in water to make a tea that was applied as a poultice for wounds and skin infections, as reported by Mbeki and Khumalo, 2018. In the West Indies, the Taino used a leaf infusion to treat fevers and as a mild analgesic, a use noted in the ethnobotanical survey of the Dominican Republic by Pérez et al., 2019.

A simple, safe preparation is a mild leaf tea. Take 5 g of fresh or dried leaves, steep in 250 ml of boiling water for 10 minutes, strain, and drink 1–2 cups per day. Avoid prolonged use beyond a week, and pregnant women should consult a healthcare professional before use, as the plant contains compounds that may affect uterine tone.

The therapeutic effects of Dodonaea viscosa are largely attributed to its flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol) and the sesquiterpene hopane‑type compounds, which have documented anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial activity.
