Bergera euchrestifolia, commonly known as curryleaf, is used by many communities for culinary flavoring and as a gentle digestive aid, most often in tea‑like infusions. In parts of southern India, people add a handful of fresh leaves to simmering water for a quick digestive tea (Handbook of Medicinal Spices, 2002). In the Hmong/Lao diaspora of northern Thailand, similar infusions are taken after heavy meals (Karch, 1999). On the island of Mauritius, where the plant is a staple of the kitchen garden, dried leaves are steeped for “kurry chai,” a simple after‑dinner beverage (Miller & Morris, 2004). While infusions dominate, communities in Sri Lanka, especially the Vadda people of Monaragala, grind fresh leaves into a poultice applied to bumps and bruises (Tennekoon & Wickramasinghe, 2008). In southern India’s Sri Lanka Travancore region, households also make an ethanol tincture of the leaves for household first‑aid (Mulvaney, 2003).

Practical recipe: mild digestive tea. Rinse 6–8 fresh curry leaves and combine with 250 ml (about 1 cup) of near‑boiling water. Cover and steep for 10–12 minutes, then strain. Fresh leaves taste brighter; dried leaves use 3–4 g in 250 ml water, steeped 10 minutes. Alternatively, a 1:5 (w/v) tincture uses 40 g chopped fresh leaves macerated in 200 ml 45–50% ethanol for 2–3 weeks, shaking daily, then filtered; take 5–10 drops diluted in water. Safety: The leaf infusion is common in cooking, but high or concentrated doses are not well studied. Do not exceed 2–3 cups of tea per day unless advised by a health professional. Avoid essential oil internally; it may be irritating. Pregnant and nursing people should use caution and consult a clinician before medicinal preparations (Handbook of Medicinal Spices, 2002).

Active constituents that plausibly underlie its digestive and carminative reputation include characteristic leaf essential oils dominated by monoterpenes such as d‑limonene, α‑pinene, and β‑pinene, often with myrcene and smaller amounts of linalool, β‑caryophyllene, and α‑humulene (Tainter & Grenis, 2001). These volatile oils stimulate digestive secretions and ease bloating. The presence of flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol also offers antioxidant support (Handbook of Medicinal Spices, 2002).

Modern relevance: despite limited human clinical trials, ongoing chemical studies and steady commercial availability of the leaves have helped preserve home‑kitchen and small‑scale medicinal use in southern India, Sri Lanka, and the Hmong diaspora (Miller & Morris, 2004; Tainter & Grenis, 2001).
