Among the British Isles and parts of western Europe, dried aerial parts of Agrimonia eupatoria have been used in infusions and decoctions to treat mild sore throat and mouth ulceration. Grieve documented that infusions were used in England as a gargle and wash for sore throats, canker sores, and weak gums (Grieve, A Modern Herbal, 1931). In the Carpathians and the Balkans, tea or gargles prepared from the aerial parts were employed for catarrh, indigestion, and as a mild astringent; Vlahović et al. recorded these uses in a survey of the Balkans (Vlahović et al., 2007, Journal of Ethnopharmacology). In Galicia and surrounding regions of Spain, agrarian herbalists have long used a bitter infusion of the herb as a digestive tea and wound rinse, a practice noted in ethnobotanical fieldwork (Vázquez et al., Ethnobotany Research and Applications, 2007). Across these regions the herb’s tannins were prized for their gently astringent effect on mucous membranes.
For a mild gargle, measure 6–8 g of dried aerial parts (leaves, stems, and flowers) for 200 ml of near‑boiling water. Cover and steep for 10–12 minutes, then cool to a comfortably warm temperature before swishing and spitting; use up to three times daily and rinse the mouth with plain water afterward. For a simple 1:5 herbal tincture suitable for bathing a small area or using as a very dilute mouthwash, pack 20 g of dried aerial parts into a jar, cover with 100 ml of 45% ethanol, seal, and macerate in the dark for 10–14 days, shaking daily; strain and store in a tight, amber bottle. No significant internal dose limits are supported by modern sources, but external use over irritated skin should be discontinued if stinging occurs. Safety notes: avoid use during pregnancy unless advised by a qualified practitioner; do not use the undiluted tincture inside the mouth for longer than a minute or two, as the alcohol may irritate mucosal tissues.
Phytochemical studies consistently report tannins (agrimoniin and related hydrolysable tannins), flavonoids such as luteolin and apigenin, phenolic acids (notably chlorogenic acid), and volatile compounds including eugenol and thymol. The astringent tannins plausibly underlie the traditional gargle use for mouth and throat soreness, while flavonoids and phenolic acids may contribute to reported anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial activities.
Modern relevance: agrimony tea and tincture remain available as herbal preparations, and recent pharmacological work continues to explore its tannins and phenolics as antimicrobial and wound‑healing agents (Atanasov et al., Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2015; Stojanović et al., Natural Product Research, 2004).
