Jatropha curcas leaves are traditionally prepared as infusions, decoctions, and topical poultices to treat skin infections, wounds, and fevers. Among the Yoruba of Nigeria, Olatunji et al., 2018 describe a decoction of fresh leaves boiled for 15 minutes and drunk to reduce fever, while the Kongo people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mumba et al., 2015 report a poultice of leaf pulp applied to open wounds to promote healing. In Mexico, the Nahua use a mild tea of dried leaves for skin irritation, as documented by García et al., 2019. In each case the leaves are boiled or macerated to lessen the irritant phorbol esters before use.

A simple leaf tea can be made by steeping 5 g of dried Jatropha curcas leaves in 250 ml of boiling water for 10 minutes, then straining. Drink one cup daily for mild fever or skin inflammation. Because the leaves contain phorbol esters, avoid ingestion if pregnant, lactating, or if you have a history of skin sensitivity. For topical use, mash fresh leaves into a paste, apply to the affected area, cover with gauze, and leave for 30 minutes before rinsing.

The pharmacological profile of Jatropha curcas supports its traditional uses. Phorbol esters, the most abundant terpenoids in the leaves, have documented anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial effects when applied topically.
