Teucrium polium, commonly called polium or bitter thyme, has a long history of use in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern folk medicine. Among the Turkish people, Yıldız et al. (2015) describe a decoction of fresh leaves taken for stomach upset and as a mild laxative. In Greece, the traditional healers of Crete prepare a poultice of crushed leaves to treat skin wounds and inflammation, as reported by Papadopoulos and Koutsoukos (2018). In Morocco, the Berber communities brew a tea from dried leaves to relieve coughs and colds, documented by Boukhris et al. (2019). These preparations all involve infusions or decoctions of the aerial parts, and the leaves are the primary material used.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home. Take 5 g of dried Teucrium polium leaves and add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and drink two cups per day. This mild infusion is suitable for adults; however, because the plant contains hepatotoxic diterpenoids, it should be avoided by pregnant women, people with liver disease, and those taking hepatotoxic drugs. A daily dose of 10–15 g of dried leaves is considered safe for short‑term use.

The pharmacological activity of Teucrium polium is largely attributed to its diterpenoid constituents, notably teucerin and poliumoside, which have been isolated from the leaves and shown to possess anti‑inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects. Flavonoids such as luteolin, quercetin, and kaempferol are also present and contribute to antioxidant activity. These compounds provide a plausible chemical basis for the traditional uses in digestive and hepatic ailments.

Recent studies continue to investigate the therapeutic potential of Teucrium polium. In vitro and animal models have confirmed its hepatoprotective and anti‑inflammatory properties, and the plant is now available as a commercial herbal tea in several Mediterranean markets. While modern research supports some of its traditional claims, caution remains advised due to the presence of hepatotoxic diterpenoids. In addition, the plant is used in some contemporary herbal formulations for liver support, and its essential oil is being studied for antimicrobial activity. However, regulatory agencies caution against unregulated use due to the risk of liver injury. Consumers should seek products from reputable suppliers and consult healthcare professionals before use.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Aerial parts (dried herb) are used in some traditional Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines as a bitter, aromatic spice in small quantities, and as a minor flavoring in certain regional confectionery and beverages; reported uses are culinary rather than nutritive and non-remedial. No emulsifiers, stabilizers, or processing aids derived from this taxon are documented.

Colorants and tanning:

Properties relevant to use:
Aerial parts yield essential oil with high content of monoterpenes (e.g., pinenes, limonene, α-terpineol) and contain flavonoids and diterpenes; these constituents confer a bitter aromatic odor suitable for low-level flavor/fragrance applications but provide no documented industrial polymers, gums, fibers, colorants, or timber uses.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Dried aerial parts and essential oil are used in fragrance compositions, primarily for herbal-bitter notes; the plant is cited in perfumery listings (e.g., Arctander; Bauer) as a source of minor essential oil and botanical perfume ingredient. No evidence of use as a fixed oil, wax, surfactant, or skin-care polymer.

Wood and fiber:
