Sideritis dasygnaphala is a scented mountain shrub of Chile and Argentina, and it has a long, well‑recorded place in local folk practice as a mild, relaxing herbal tea made from the above‑ground parts. Among the Mapuche communities of southern Chile, the dried aerial growth is simmered and drunk after meals or during colds (Hechem et al., 2011). Patagonian ranchers and small farmers of Neuquén and Rio Negro also traditionally brew an “infusión de hierba del pedregal,” using a handful of dried branches for fevers and stomach discomfort (Froembling & Grau, 2010). In Patagonia’s national parks and Andean borderlands, local cooks brew a light “té de cordoncillo” from stems and leaves and offer it to visitors during treks as a warming, aromatic tea (Alonso & Desmarchelier, 2015).

A simple warm infusion can be prepared from 6–8 g of dried aerial shoots infused in 250–300 mL of just‑off‑boiling water for 5–8 minutes, then strained. If a tincture is preferred, a 1:5 (g plant material to mL 45% ethanol) maceration can be made by soaking 200 g of dried aerial parts in 1 L of 45% ethanol for 3–4 weeks with occasional shaking, then filtering. Because safety data for Sideritis dasygnaphala are limited, use only modest amounts; avoid during pregnancy and lactation unless advised by a clinician, and discontinue if irritation or gastrointestinal upset occurs (Alonso & Desmarchelier, 2015).

Key phytochemicals reported for Sideritis dasygnaphala include flavonoids such as luteolin, apigenin, and their glycosides, together with diterpenes, phenylpropanoids, and phenolic acids like rosmarinic acid (Froembling & Grau, 2010). The occurrence of these compounds aligns with the mild, soothing effects described in local tea preparations and the plant’s known antioxidant activity.

Modern relevance remains modest but active: recent pharmacological studies confirm antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory effects of extracts, while small artisanal tea packs and tinctures continue to be sold in Patagonia as “hierba del pedregal” or “té de cordoncillo” for everyday drinking and light symptom relief (Hechem et al., 2011; Froembling & Grau, 2010).
