Oroxylum indicum, known in Ayurveda as “bamboo tree,” has a long record of use as an inhalant and tonic. In classical Ayurvedic texts the bark is boiled to produce a decoction that is drunk for cough, asthma, and fever (Bhatia et al., 2015). The same bark decoction is reported among the Khasi people of Meghalaya, where it is used to relieve chest congestion and to treat colds (Kumar et al., 2018). In the Bodo community of Assam, the ripe fruit is macerated in water to make a mild tea that is taken as a general tonic and to reduce fever (Saha et al., 2019). In the Andaman Islands, the young leaves are ground into a paste and applied as a poultice for skin infections and minor wounds (Rao et al., 2020). All of these preparations involve infusions, decoctions, or macerations of bark, fruit, or leaves.

A simple bark decoction for cough: take 5 g of dried bark, add it to 250 ml of boiling water, let it steep for 10 minutes, then strain. Drink two cups of the warm liquid each day. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have a history of gastrointestinal upset, avoid this preparation or consult a qualified practitioner. For a more concentrated tincture, combine 10 g of dried bark with 50 ml of 95 % ethanol, seal the mixture, and let it steep for four weeks, shaking daily. Strain the liquid and store it in a dark bottle. Use 1–2 ml of the tincture diluted in water or juice once or twice daily; avoid use during pregnancy.

The therapeutic effects of Oroxylum indicum are largely attributed to its flavonoid profile. The bark and fruit contain oroxylin A, chrysin, baicalein, baicalin, and wogonin, all of which have been isolated and shown to possess anti‑inflammatory, anti‑oxidant, and bronchodilatory activities. These compounds provide a biochemical basis for the plant’s traditional use in treating respiratory ailments and reducing fever.

Today, Oroxylum indicum is being investigated for its potential as a natural cough suppressant and anti‑inflammatory agent. Several commercial herbal supplements list the bark extract as an ingredient, and ongoing research is exploring its efficacy in modern clinical trials.

Common products:
Seed oil is extracted from the mature seeds and is used industrially as a non-drying oil for soap-making and candle production. The pulp remaining after oil extraction is a feed ingredient for livestock.

Colorants and tanning:
The stem bark yields tannins used for leather tanning, giving light to medium brown coloration on protein fibers. It is also reported to produce a brown dye for textiles and paper, attributed to flavone and flavonoid content in the bark.

Wood and fiber:
The wood is lightweight and has been used in rural construction, plywood, and common carpentry. The species is also planted for agroforestry and reforestation on degraded sites due to its fast growth and pioneer ecology.

Sustainability and sourcing:
The species regenerates readily from seed and is used in reforestation and village planting; pods and seeds are collected from the wild or cultivated stands, with limited industrial cultivation. Populations are locally abundant and not under global conservation concern.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
The seed oil has been used in traditional soap-making, suggesting minor contemporary use in cosmetic formulations as a low-iodine, non-drying oil base.
