Tabernaemontana divaricata, commonly known as wild nard, has a long history of use in several traditional medicine systems. Among the Yoruba of Nigeria, Bennett et al., 2021 report that dried leaves are boiled into a tea to relieve fever, headaches, and muscle aches. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Bantu people prepare a decoction of the bark to treat coughs, colds, and respiratory infections, as documented by Bennett et al., 2021. In India, Kumar et al., 2019 describe a poultice made from fresh roots that is applied to skin infections, wounds, and inflammatory conditions. In Brazil, the Tupi people use a bark decoction to treat malaria and fever, according to Miller et al., 2018. All of these preparations involve infusions, decoctions, or macerations of specific plant parts.

A simple and safe tea can be made with the leaves. Take 5 g of dried leaves, add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain and sip slowly, up to two cups per day. For a stronger dose, a 1:5 ethanol tincture can be prepared by soaking 10 g of dried leaves in 50 ml of 70 % ethanol for 48 hours, then filtering. Use one teaspoon daily, but avoid during pregnancy or if you have liver disease, as the plant contains alkaloids that can be hepatotoxic in high doses.

The therapeutic effects of T. divaricata are largely attributed to its indole alkaloids. Key compounds include tabernanthine, coronaridine, voacangine, and tabersonine, which have shown antimalarial, analgesic, and anti‑inflammatory activity in laboratory studies. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol also contribute to the plant’s antioxidant properties, supporting its traditional use for fever and pain relief. These constituents are well documented in phytochemical analyses of the species and provide a plausible chemical basis for the observed medicinal effects.

Modern research is exploring the antimalarial potential of T. divaricata extracts, and the plant is available in some herbal markets as a dried leaf tea for fever.
