Logs for fuelwood are produced from Alnus japonica (Thunb.) Steud. in its native range; cultivation for short-rotation bioenergy has been investigated in East Asia due to fast growth and nitrogen fixation.

Industrial and craft applications:
Wood chips have been evaluated for kraft pulp production in mixed-species pulping programs in Japan; in mixed batches it behaves similarly to other alder species with moderate density, relatively low lignin content, and readily bleachable fibers. Bark is used for tannin extraction in regional tannery supply chains; alder bark yields high-molecular-weight hydrolyzable tannins suitable for leather tanning processes.

Scientific/model-organism use:
A. japonica is a model species for the study of alder–Frankia actinorhizal symbiosis, nitrogen acquisition in riparian ecosystems, and soil colonization under fluctuating water tables. Protocols for seedling inoculation, root-nodule observation, and nitrogen-fixation assays (acetylene reduction; 15N tracer) are established. Colorants and tanning:
Alder bark provides brown dyes for protein fibers and is a source of hydrolysable tannins for vegetable tanning of leather.

Wood and fiber:
Wood is valued for turning and furniture when knots are minimized; bast fiber production is reported in historical sources for the genus. Bark resin (alder resin) is of the labdane/clerodane class and contributes to natural adhesives and varnish formulations in heritage contexts.

Properties relevant to use:
Low-lignin, high-cellulose wood yields high pulp yields with moderate bleachability; bark hydrolysable tannins chelate metal ions and bind collagen; resin acids contribute to adhesive and coating tack and water resistance; rapid growth and symbiotic nitrogen fixation enable short-rotation cycles.

Tannin products for leather are regulated as chemicals for industrial uses under EU REACH; pulp and paper from A. japonica follow national timber and pulp standards; food uses are not documented in primary literature for the species.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Propagation by seed or rooted cuttings is practiced for riparian restoration and erosion control; stands commonly regenerate after flooding, enabling managed short-rotation extraction. In some coastal and riverine regions, A. japonica is listed as invasive outside its native range, and its planting requires risk assessments against local ecological guidelines.
