Common products:
The species yields a starch from its tuberous root used historically as a sizing agent and paste in textile and papermaking operations. The starch is also reported as a food adjunct and base for noodles and gluten substitutes in several Chinese domestic cuisines. A glyceride seed oil has been expressed experimentally and examined for physicochemical suitability as a potential edible oil.

Industrial and craft applications:
Root starch serves as a sizing and coating material for textiles and paper, providing film-forming ability and adhesion after gelatinization. Residual plant material after starch extraction has been evaluated as a fermentation substrate, including for ethanol production; for example, 63.4 g total sugars (primarily glucose) per 100 g dry matter with ethanol yields of about 0.47 g per gram of reducing sugar have been reported. Polysaccharide extracts have been used as adhesives and thickeners in paste formulations.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Root starch (flour) and its derived starch paste are used as cooking ingredients and bases for noodle-like preparations and gluten-free products, as well as in batters and coatings. The pressed seed oil has been described as an experimental edible oil and potential frying medium.

Colorants and tanning:
Root tannin content of 7.8–18.7% has been reported, with tanning indices around 70–130 in standardized extractions. Hydrolyzable tannins extracted from the root are used for leather tanning in processes similar to those employing sumac or chestnut tannins.

Wood and fiber:
The species is not a timber tree. No documented fiber or wood uses are known.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
No confirmed uses are recorded.

Properties relevant to use:
Root starch is high in amylose (about 26–27%), supporting pastes with strong gelling and film-forming properties; the root also contains mucilaginous polysaccharides that enhance viscosity and adhesion. Seed oil is characterized by a saponification value of about 192–195 mg KOH/g and an iodine value of approximately 118 g I2/100 g, typical of medium-chain–heavy oil profiles suitable for food applications and resin modification. Root hydrolyzable tannins (gallotannins) provide high acidity and protein-binding capacity for tanning.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Commercial supply appears limited to wild or small-scale cultivated roots for food and industrial trials; reliable harvesting and processing data are sparse. No conservation status or sustainability frameworks are reported for this taxon in the sources cited.
