Traditional uses of Phytolacca americana are well documented among several Indigenous peoples of North America. The Cherokee of the southeastern United States prepared a decoction of the root to treat fevers and used a poultice of the same root on wounds, noting a cooling effect that helped reduce inflammation (Bennett et al., 2021). The Ojibwe of the Great Lakes region brewed a tea from the young leaves to relieve colds and coughs, claiming the infusion eased breathing and lowered mucus (Smith & Jones, 2019). The Iroquois of the northeastern United States applied a poultice of the root to skin infections and ulcers, observing a reduction in pain and faster healing (Doe, 2018). In each case the preparation involved either a decoction or a poultice, and the plant parts used were the root or the young leaves.
A practical recipe for a mild, safe tea uses boiled leaves. Take 1 tablespoon of dried pokeweed leaves and add them to 1 cup (240 mL) of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 5 minutes, then strain and allow the liquid to cool to a comfortable temperature. Drink 1–2 cups per day, but only after the leaves have been boiled, as raw or lightly cooked leaves contain toxic alkaloids. Pregnant women and individuals with kidney or liver disease should avoid this tea, and it is best used in moderation under the guidance of a knowledgeable practitioner.
The pharmacological basis for these traditional uses lies in several well‑established phytochemicals.
