Hesperis matronalis, also known as dame's rocket, is a flowering plant in the Brassicaceae family. It is native to Eurasia but has been cultivated in many other parts of the world for its attractive spring blooms. It has multiple common names and is often confused with native Phlox species. It is a biennial or short-lived perennial and can become a weed in some areas. The plant has showy flowers in various shades of lavender and purple, and some double-flowered varieties exist. It is easy to grow and self-seeds quickly, making it a popular choice for gardens. However, it has been found to be ecologically invasive in North America. The plant is also edible, with young leaves and seeds being used in salads. It is native to southern Europe but has been introduced to many other temperate regions. In some areas, it is considered a noxious weed and is banned or restricted.
