Cichorium endivia, commonly known as endive, has a long history of use as a digestive tonic in European folk medicine. Among the French, Bennett et al., 2021 report that the leaves are steeped in hot water to make a bitter tea that is taken after heavy meals to aid digestion. In German traditional medicine, Klein, 1998 documents that the same leaf infusion is used as a mild diuretic to relieve bloating and urinary discomfort. Italian herbalists, as described by Rossi, 2003, prepare a similar tea from the leaves to treat stomach cramps and to stimulate appetite, especially in the autumn months when the plant is in peak flavor. In all three traditions the preparation involves a decoction or infusion of the fresh or dried leaves, with no other plant parts used.
A simple, safe recipe for a mild endive tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried endive leaves (about one tablespoon) and place them in a cup. Pour 250 ml of boiling water over the leaves and let steep for 5 minutes. Strain the liquid and sip slowly. The tea can be enjoyed once or twice daily, but it is advisable to limit intake to 10 g of leaves per day to avoid a mild laxative effect that can occur with larger doses.
