Ethnobotanical Uses
Across the karst landscapes of southern China and adjacent uplands, Dendrobium chrysanthum has long been used as a cooling tonic made from its thick pseudobulbous stems. Han practitioners of Guangdong and Guangxi have steeped the dried stems as a gentle “herb tea” to nourish Yin, particularly during convalescence; their preparation is documented in Zhang et al., Chinese Materia Medica, 2005. Among the Miao communities of Guizhou, women have simmered fresh stems as a decoction taken after childbirth to help restore fluids and energy, as recorded in Guizhou Provincial Ethnomedicine Investigations, 1980. The Dai people of Yunnan boil the dried stems to a clear infusion and drink it as a refreshing beverage in hot weather, a practice reported by the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Folk Medicines in Yunnan, 1992.
A simple, mild tea can be prepared from the dried stems. Roughly 10 g of cut stem is simmered in 500 mL of water for 10–15 minutes and then drunk warm while still clear; a second short decoction of the same material yields a second cup. Use one to two cups daily; do not exceed 30 g of material per day. Because data are incomplete, avoid during pregnancy and lactation, and do not give to infants; steer clear if you are allergic to orchids.
The stems are rich in bibenzyls and phenanthrenes characteristic of many Dendrobium species, notably fimbriol B, moscatilin, and dihydro-6-hydroxy-5,7-dimethoxyphenanthrene, identified by Zhao et al., Phytochemistry, 2011. Polysaccharide fractions from D. chrysanthum stems have been studied, with immunomodulatory effects reported by Zhang et al., International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 2013. These compounds are consistent with the plant’s reputation as a moistening Yin tonic and explain its traditional use as a gentle restorative beverage.
Today the stems are sold under the name tiepi shihu in Chinese markets and by specialty herbal vendors; modern extracts appear in formulas for fatigue and convalescence, and the research on phenanthrenes and polysaccharides continues to inform new products while tea drinking remains a home remedy in many families.

It is used in plant-science and horticulture education as a model epiphyte for teaching epiphytic orchid cultivation and pollination biology. The species has served as a research organism in orchid physiology (e.g., CAM vs. C3 metabolism in Dendrobium) and has been referenced in floral trait studies; records include listings in the Orchid Review and use of specific clones in basic cultivation research. It has no recorded uses in timber, fiber, colorants/tanning, food/beverage production, industrial resins, biofuels, or fragrance/cosmetics.

Commercial material is primarily propagated by division and meristem culture to reduce wild collection pressure. International trade is governed by CITES Appendix II; permits and phytosanitary documentation are required for cross-border movement.
