ETNOBOTANICAL USES

Pyrolirion flavum is not a recognized food or medicinal plant. Across the regions where it occurs in the Andes—southern Peru, western Bolivia, and northern Chile—no historic or contemporary source reports preparation as a tea, decoction, tincture, maceration, or poultice. Overviews of Andean ethnobotany and horticultural literature (Brako and Zarucchi, 1993; Jørgensen et al., 2010; Rodríguez, 2010; Jardín Botánico Nacional, 2011) list the species as ornamental and do not record any traditional medicinal use of any plant part.

The lack of recorded traditional uses is significant given the plant family’s chemistry. Many Amaryllidaceae accumulate galanthamine-type alkaloids (Bastida et al., 2006; Gotti et al., 2006). While galanthamine is the active principle in pharmaceutical galantamine used for Alzheimer’s disease, there is no ethnobotanical or modern evidence that Andean communities prepared P. flavum as a remedy, nor that the compound occurs in this species. In the absence of cultural documentation, the plant should not be used as a home remedy.

Modern relevance: P. flavum remains known primarily in horticulture; conservation interest arises from its restricted Andean distribution (Jørgensen et al., 2010). Because of unverified chemistry and lack of traditional use, it is not cultivated for food or medicinal applications and should be treated as ornamental only.

For clarity, do not use or prepare Pyrolirion flavum as a tea, tincture, poultice, or any internal or topical application. Its family and toxicity context underscore the need to avoid unverified experimentation.

The species produces a small, tunicated bulb that sprouts a rosette of narrow leaves followed by a solitary stem bearing a bright yellow, trumpet‑shaped flower in early summer. Specialist bulb nurseries in Europe and North America list the taxon in their catalogs for use in rock‑gardens, alpine plantings, and container displays (Royal Horticultural Society Plant Finder, 2023). Plants are sold as dormant bulbs, typically in groups of three to five, and are marketed under horticultural trade names such as “Golden Pyrolirion.” The species is also occasionally harvested as a cut flower for small‑scale floral arrangements, although its brief vase life limits commercial importance on a large scale.

Properties relevant to use:
The bulbs measure 2–3 cm in diameter and are protected by a papery outer tunic, a morphology that aids storage of reserves and allows the plant to survive the cool, well‑drained soils typical of its native Andean grassland habitat. The species is hardy to USDA zones 8–10 and tolerates moderate frost, making it suitable for gardeners seeking low‑maintenance alpine displays. Its floral architecture—actinomorphic yellow corollas with a narrow tube and reflexed lobes—provides visual appeal that drives horticultural demand.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Commercial propagation of Pyrolirion flavum is performed vegetatively by bulb division and, increasingly, by tissue‑culture methods. Horticultural databases record the material as “cultivar‑derived, not wild‑harvested,” indicating that nurseries rely on cultivated stock rather than collection from natural populations (Plants of the World Online, 2024). No international trade restrictions (CITES) or regional conservation listings have been reported for this taxon, reflecting a relatively secure status in its native range. Nursery catalogs consistently emphasize the use of cultivated material, thereby minimizing pressure on wild populations.
