Psilotum nudum, commonly known as the whisk fern, is a fernlike plant found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. It lacks roots and has greatly reduced leaves, earning it the Latin name Psilotum nudum, which means “bare naked”. It is often found growing epiphytically in tropical areas, and in rock crevices in more temperate areas. In Japan, it was once cultivated in gardens as an ornamental plant, and in Hawaii it was used medicinally and for making traditional leis. It was also used as a small broom, made by tying a handful of its branches together. It may also be a good source of antimicrobial chemicals.
