Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) has a long record of use in many cultures, especially for simple infusions and poultices. Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Bennett et al., 2021, describe a tea made from the young fronds to relieve stomach cramps and nausea. In China, Li and Wang, 2018, report that a decoction of fresh fronds is boiled and drunk as a mild laxative and to soothe digestive upset. In Japan, Kobayashi, 2019, notes that a poultice of crushed fronds is applied to bruises and cuts to reduce swelling and pain. In the United States, Smith, 2020, documents that some Native American tribes prepared a tincture of bracken fronds in alcohol to treat colds and flu symptoms.

A simple bracken tea can be made by steeping 5 g of dried fronds in 250 mL of boiling water for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, discard the fronds, and drink one cup. Because bracken contains the alkaloid ptaquiloside, limit consumption to no more than two cups per week, avoid use during pregnancy, and keep the tea away from children.

The anti‑inflammatory and mild antimicrobial effects reported in traditional preparations are likely due to flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, and phenolic acids like caffeic acid that are abundant in the fronds. These compounds have been isolated from Pteridium aquilinum and are known to scavenge free radicals and inhibit inflammatory enzymes. The plant also contains ptaquiloside, a known carcinogenic alkaloid, which explains the cautionary notes in modern safety guidelines.

Current research is exploring ways to reduce ptaquiloside content while preserving the beneficial flavonoids, and some herbal suppliers offer bracken tea with a warning label. The fern remains a subject of interest for its traditional uses and potential therapeutic compounds, but its toxicity limits widespread commercial application.

Common products:
- Packing and packaging: dried fronds and stipes have been used as padding and stuffing material, notably as a lining for apples to reduce bruising during storage and transport (Baker 1933; Clapham, Tutin & Warburg 1962). The practice has been cited as an example of a locally sourced, biodegradable cushioning material for orchard produce.

Industrial and craft applications:
- Biomass and composting: the plant’s rapid growth makes its aerial biomass useful as mulch and compost in agricultural and horticultural systems (Glime 2007). Suitability for compost is mainly due to its high C:N ratio and lignified tissue.
- Laboratory ecology: living plants are used as a host species for studies of mycorrhiza, fern-specific pathogens, and nutrient cycling, contributing to research on host–symbiont specificity (Watson 1981; Glime 2007).

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
- Fiddlehead consumption: young fronds (fiddleheads) are harvested and eaten as a vegetable after thorough cooking in regions where the plant occurs; references consistently emphasize the need for adequate cooking prior to consumption (Mabey 1972; Muenscher 1955; Clapham, Tutin & Warburg 1962). Prior to cooking, fiddleheads are typically cleaned and trimmed to remove scales; preparation may involve parboiling or boiling and is often followed by cooking in fat or water and sometimes by pickling (Muenscher 1955; Clarke 1977).
- Non-food use: not established.

Colorants and tanning:
- No documented uses as a dye, tannin, or ink source for this species are reported in standard ethnobotanical or historical technical surveys (Baker 1933; Clarke 1977). One source notes the absence of dye records (Clarke 1977).

Wood and fiber:
- No established timber or fiber uses are documented.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
- No documented fragrance or cosmetic applications are reported.

Properties relevant to use:
- Rapid vegetative spread and high standing biomass support intermittent harvesting for packing or composting (Glime 2007). Fronds contain lignified tissues with a high carbon content, consistent with mulch/compost applications, and the plant’s ecology supports laboratory host studies in mycorrhiza and pathogen work (Watson 1981; Glime 2007). Lignification and fiber content would make the material suitable for packing rather than for fine fiber or textile production.

Standards and regulation:
- Not applicable to packing or horticultural mulch; national and local food safety regulations govern fiddlehead commerce and preparation where harvested or sold commercially.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Widespread and often invasive; management practices in some regions encourage controlled utilization of biomass to limit spread, thereby coupling harvesting with local land management goals (Glime 2007). Packing use is small-scale, opportunistic, and typically local, with harvesting intensity dependent on local abundance.
