Industrial and craft applications:
Extracts of the bark of Vismia jefensis are reported to contain hypericin-type anthraquinones and flavonoid constituents. These classes of phenolic compounds are relevant for their potential as natural dyes and mordants; anthraquinones are known to complex with metal ions, yielding reddish hues on protein fibers such as wool and silk. However, lightfastness and washfastness are typically moderate for anthraquinone-based colorants, and finishing or mordanting is required for practical textile applications.

Colorants and tanning:
In addition to anthraquinones, Vismia species have yielded flavonoids, tannins, and coumarins. Hyperforin has been identified in related Hypericum species and may occur in Vismia species as well. The co-occurrence of hyperforin and hypericin derivatives would suggest strong antioxidant activity, potentially valuable for stabilization of natural dyes. The bark also contains tannins; these are often ellagitannins/gallotannins, whose ortho-dihydroxyphenolic profile supports potential use in leather tanning for imparting fullness and durability. Chemical classes pertinent to these applications include hypericin-type anthraquinones and polyphenolic condensed/hydrolyzable tannins; the exact compounds in V. jefensis require verification for each specific use.
