Mallotus japonicus, known in Chinese as “Zhu Ye,” is a long‑standing ingredient in East Asian folk medicine. In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) the dried leaves are prescribed as a decoction for cough and sore throat, while the bark is applied as a poultice to treat eczema, psoriasis, and other inflammatory skin conditions. The Japanese Pharmacopoeia (2019) records a similar use: a mild tea of the leaves is taken to relieve respiratory irritation, and a macerated bark paste is rubbed on rashes. In Korean traditional medicine, the Korean Pharmacopoeia (2018) lists the root as an infusion for muscle pain and the bark as a topical poultice for skin infections. These three cultures all rely on infusions, decoctions, tinctures, or poultices of Mallotus japonicus, underscoring its versatility in treating both internal and external ailments.

A simple, safe tea can be made from the leaves. Take 5 g of dried leaves, add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain, cool, and drink two cups per day. This preparation is mild and generally well tolerated, but it should be avoided by pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people with known skin sensitivity should test a small amount first, as the plant can cause irritation in some individuals.

The therapeutic effects of Mallotus japonicus are linked to several well‑documented phytochemicals. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, along with diterpenoids like mallotoxin and mallotol, have been isolated from the leaves and bark. Triterpenoids, including oleanolic acid, are also present. These compounds possess anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties that help explain the plant’s traditional use for cough, sore throat, and skin inflammation.

Modern research continues to validate these uses. Recent in‑vitro studies confirm the anti‑psoriatic activity of leaf extracts, and a small clinical trial in Japan reported reduced itching and lesion size in patients using a topical cream containing Mallotus japonicus extract. Commercially, the plant’s bark extract is available in herbal skin‑care products marketed for eczema and dermatitis, and the leaf tea is sold in specialty health‑food stores across East Asia. Thus, Mallotus japonicus remains a relevant, evidence‑backed resource for both traditional practitioners and contemporary consumers.
