Scrophularia ningpoensis, known in Chinese medicine as “Ningpo figwort,” has a long history of use as an anti‑inflammatory and antitussive remedy. In the Han‑Chinese pharmacopeia, the dried root is boiled to make a decoction that is taken for cough, sore throat, and bronchial irritation (Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2020). Among the Korean “Hwangryong” practitioners, a similar decoction of the root is prescribed for chronic bronchitis and pharyngitis (Korean Pharmacopoeia, 2019). Vietnamese herbalists also record the use of a root infusion for treating upper respiratory infections and as a mild expectorant (Nguyen et al., 2018). In each case, the preparation involves a water‑based infusion or decoction of the dried root, sometimes combined with other herbs such as *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* or *Mentha haplocalyx* to enhance the soothing effect.

A practical decoction recipe is as follows: take 10 g of dried Scrophularia ningpoensis root, add 200 mL of water, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes, then strain the liquid. Drink the clear decoction in two equal cups, preferably in the morning and evening. Limit the use to no more than three consecutive days, and avoid use during pregnancy or lactation unless supervised by a qualified practitioner, as some iridoid glycosides may have mild hepatotoxic potential at high doses.

The therapeutic effects of Scrophularia ningpoensis are largely attributed to its iridoid glycosides, notably scrophularin and harpagoside, which have documented anti‑inflammatory and analgesic properties.
