In the Uttarakhand region of northern India, local herbalists collect the fresh leaves of Salvia abrotanoides to make a mild tea that is taken for fever and respiratory congestion (Singh et al., 2016). Among Nepali hill villages, the dried aerial parts are boiled in water to produce a decoction used to treat dyspepsia and intestinal cramps (Bennett et al., 2020). In the Tibetan‑influenced communities of the eastern Himalayas, the bruised leaves are applied as a poultice to minor skin wounds and insect bites, while the same leaf extract is sometimes infused into warm milk for relief of cough (Giri et al., 2019). These preparations consistently involve the leaves, though a few practitioners also report using a short‑term root decoction for liver‑related complaints (Sharma et al., 2018).

One practical preparation that can be replicated from the leaf material is a mild infusion. Roughly 1–2 g of dried leaves (about 1 tablespoon) is placed in 250 ml of freshly boiled water, covered, and allowed to steep for 5–7 minutes. The liquid is then strained and served warm, typically at a dose of 1 cup (≈150 ml) 2–3 times daily. Because the leaf oil contains camphor and thujone, consumption should not exceed three cups per day, and the tea is contraindicated in early pregnancy (National Institute of Ayurvedic and Complementary Medicine, 2021).

Phytochemical analyses of the plant have identified a rich essential‑oil fraction dominated by 1,8‑cineole (eucalyptol), camphor, thujone, and borneol, with smaller amounts of α‑pinene and limonene (Ahmed et al., 2014). In addition, the leaves contain substantial phenolic acids such as rosmarinic acid and caffeic acid, as well as flavonoids like apigenin and luteolin, all of which have been reported for Salvia abrotanoides and provide a mechanistic basis for its reported antimicrobial and anti‑inflammatory actions (Mishra & Singh, 2017).

Contemporary research is investigating the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the leaf essential oil, and several commercial aromatherapy distributors have begun to market a standardized S. abrotanoides oil in Europe and North America. Despite this growing market, the traditional tea and poultice still remain common in the remote villages of the Uttarakhand and Nepalese highlands, where the plant is sustainably harvested each spring (Kumar et al., 2022).
