Betula pendula (silver birch) has a long history of use in folk medicine across northern Europe, the Baltic states, and parts of Russia. In the traditional medicine of the Sami people of northern Scandinavia, the bark is boiled to make a mild tea that is taken for colds, flu, and mild fevers; this practice is documented in the ethnobotanical survey of the Lule Sami (Svensson, 2015). Among the Estonian peasantry, dried birch bark is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that is applied topically as a poultice for skin irritations and minor wounds, a use recorded in the Estonian Herbal Compendium (Kask, 2018). In Russian folk medicine, the leaves are steeped in hot water to produce a decoction that is drunk to relieve digestive upset and to reduce inflammation; this use appears in the Russian Ethnopharmacology Handbook (Ivanov, 2019).
A simple, safe preparation is a 1‑hour tea made from 5 g of fresh or dried birch bark in 250 mL of boiling water. Steep the bark for 10–15 minutes, strain, and sip warm. The tea can be taken up to three times daily, but pregnant women should avoid it because of the potential for uterine stimulation.
The therapeutic effects of birch bark and leaves are largely attributed to the presence of betulin, betulinic acid, and various flavonoids, all of which have documented anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial activity.
Modern research continues to explore birch bark extracts for their anti‑viral and anti‑inflammatory properties, and commercial birch bark tea is now available in health‑food stores across Europe.
