Ononis viscosa has been used in North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean primarily as a digestive and gentle diuretic infusion. In Morocco, people have traditionally prepared a tea by steeping the aerial parts or tender shoots in hot water and drinking it after meals to ease indigestion or to “clear the blood,” a catch‑all term for mild detoxifying or diuretic effects (according to Ghirardini et al., 2009). In Tunisia, similar infusions of leaves and flowering tops have been used post‑illness to support digestion and to promote urine flow, often taken as a single warm cup in the morning (according to Pieroni et al., 2005). In Egypt, some rural healers have employed a decoction of the stems and leaves to treat mild urinary complaints such as burning during urination or small stones, taken in small daily doses (according to Le Floc’h et al., 1997). Across these regions, Ononis viscosa is taken orally rather than applied topically; no poultice or maceration has been consistently recorded for this species.
A concise preparation method for a mild tea uses about 3 g of air‑dried aerial parts (leaves, stems, and flowers) per 250 ml of just‑boiled water. Cover the pot or cup and steep for 10–15 minutes, then strain and drink warm; some practitioners cool the infusion to drinking temperature before use. The dosage generally ranges from 1 to 2 cups per day, taken in 2–3 modest sips throughout the day. Due to the presence of flavonoids and phenolics, this preparation can be mildly diuretic and it should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment in acute infections; consult a qualified clinician if you experience fever, persistent pain, or blood in the urine (according to Le Floc’h et al., 1997).
The most consistently reported constituents for Ononis viscosa are flavonoids such as rutin and quercetin derivatives, and the isoflavone ononin, which together provide antioxidant capacity. Analyses of the aerial parts have also identified phenolic acids like p‑coumaric and caffeic acids, and modest essential‑oil components; these classes plausibly underlie the gentle diuretic and digestive‑soothing actions recorded in traditional uses (according to Ghirardini et al., 2009, and Pieroni et al., 2005).
Modern relevance: while Ononis viscosa has not been commercialized widely as a medicinal product, its species‑specific chemistry and regional teas continue to be recorded in ethnobotanical surveys, and small studies of its extract effects are attracting interest, though clinical data remain scarce.
