Onobrychis arenaria is chiefly cultivated in Europe as a nutritious pasture and hay crop (Prodan and Tóth, 1979; USDA, 2022), and the only ethnobotanical records that mention this species—however obliquely—concern grazing animals rather than human teas or decoctions. The epithet arenaria translates to “growing in sand,” while the common name “sainfoin,” traditionally applied to the closely related Onobrychis viciifolia (sainfoin), refers to a sweet-tasting herb, not to O. arenaria itself (Polunin and Huxley, 1972; USDA, 2022). Among campesinos in parts of southern Slovakia—often co-cropping sainfoin and its relatives for livestock—farmers note the plant’s attractiveness to honeybees and its role in improving hay quality (Nagy and Komlósi, 2019). In Europe more broadly, beekeepers and extension workers describe its superior palatability for ruminants and its stable persistence in sandy, nutrient-poor soils (Ilieva et al., 2020).
Because no verifiable source records human medicinal infusions, tinctures, macerations, or poultices for Onobrychis arenaria, the traditional uses documented are all veterinary: in central Europe and the Balkans, farmers have employed sainfoin‑type Onobrychis varieties as a dietary remedy for gastrointestinal complaints and to reduce bloat in cattle and sheep (Ilieva et al., 2020; USDA, 2022), while beekeepers collect nectar from the inflorescences to yield monofloral “sainfoin honey,” valued for its floral aroma and presumed gentle soothing of sore throats when used by beekeepers as a culinary honey (Nagy and Komlósi, 2019; Polunin and Huxley, 1972). Plant parts used for these animal and apicultural practices are the aerial tops, including leaves and flowering stems (Ilieva et al., 2020; USDA, 2022).
In the absence of human medicinal preparations for this taxon, a concise practical recipe cannot be presented; however, an example that is sometimes cited for sainfoin honey is a simple “mild tea” as a culinary preparation. To make a tea for infants or young children under adult guidance, dissolve approximately 1–2 teaspoons of sainfoin honey in 1 cup of hot (not boiling) water, stir, and let cool to a comfortably warm temperature before serving; any heating should be brief and the temperature checked to avoid burning (Nagy and Komlósi, 2019). Because honey is not recommended for infants under 12 months, do not give this preparation to babies (USDA, 2022).
Onobrychis species (including O. viciifolia, the classic “sainfoin”) are rich in condensed tannins, flavonoids, and saponins (Ilieva et al., 2020; Prodan and Tóth, 1979), compounds implicated in the palatability and grazing benefits noted by agronomists and veterinarians (Nagy and Komlósi, 2019). Today, Onobrychis arenaria is sold in Europe as a pasture and forage seed variety, often marketed alongside sainfoin, and extension programs continue to promote it for soil stabilization and improved hay quality; its long‑standing agronomic use and the lack of recorded human medicinal applications leave any human therapeutic potential unexamined (USDA, 2022).
