Vigna mungo, also known as black gram, is a bean that is grown in South Asia. It is closely related to the mung bean and has been reclassified from the Phaseolus to the Vigna genus. The whole urad bean is sold as black lentil, while the split bean with a white interior is called white lentil. It is a highly prized pulse in India and is extensively used in Indian cuisine. It is also grown in other tropical areas such as the Caribbean, Fiji, Mauritius, Myanmar, and Africa. The plant is an erect, suberect or trailing bush with large hairy leaves and narrow seed pods. It is commonly used in dishes like dal makhani, idli, and dosa in North and South Indian cuisine. Black gram is also high in protein, potassium, calcium, iron, and folate. It is known by various names in different languages, such as uḍida in Sanskrit and urdu bele in Tulu. There are also different varieties of black gram, including Pant Urd 31, Lam Black Gram 884, and Trombay Urd.
