Celosia argentea, also known as plumed cockscomb or silver cock's comb, is a tropical herbaceous plant in the Amaranthaceae family. It is native to India and Nepal and is known for its bright and vivid colors. However, in India and China, it is considered a troublesome weed. This plant can grow as an annual or perennial and blooms in mid-spring to summer. It produces small, hermaphrodite flowers in a variety of colors, including orange, red, purple, yellow, and cream. Celosia argentea is propagated by black seeds, with up to 43,000 seeds per ounce. It grows best in full sunlight and well-drained soil, and its flowerheads can last up to 8 weeks. There are various cultivars of this plant, such as 'Flamingo Feathers' and 'Century Rose', which have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. In addition to its ornamental value, Celosia argentea is also used in Africa to control the growth of parasitic plants and can be consumed as a leafy green vegetable in West Africa and Southeast Asia.
