Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, dried stem bark has been used as an infusions or decoctions for fevers and bladder complaints (Bennett et al., 2021). In broader Andean regions, infusions of the leaves were taken for dysentery and as a post‑partum tonic, while poultices of the fresh leaves were applied to swellings (De Feo, 1998). In India, the bark is recorded in Ayurvedic practice as a decoction for “ obstructive urinary disorders” and as a “cathartic,” and the leaves are infused or macerated for hepatic complaints; The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (2011) lists the drug as Crataeva nurvala. In classical Greek and Roman medicine, the root bark was used as a diuretic decoction and the aerial parts as infusions for fever and colic, as summarized by Duke and Wain (1981). Across the Himalayas in Nepal, whole‑plant macerations have been taken as diuretics, and leaf poultices used for sprains and swellings (Manandhar, 2002).

For a mild urinary‑tract tea: add 1–2 g of chopped stem bark (or 3–6 leaves) to 250 mL of just‑boiled water, cover, and steep 10–15 minutes; strain and sip one cup up to twice daily. For a stronger remedy: simmer 5–6 g of bark in 500 mL of water for 20–25 minutes, cool, and strain. This resembles Ayurvedic decoction practice noted by Khory and Katrak (1903). Safety note: most formulations advise adult doses and short courses; do not use during pregnancy; people with kidney or liver disease should seek medical advice.

These uses are supported by the species’ well‑reported constituents. Lupeol and β‑sitosterol, together with flavonoids and tannins in the bark and leaves, are documented across Crataeva (e.g., Dixit et al., 2008; Chopra et al., 1956; R. S. Kalra, unpublished phytochemical notes). Lupeol is widely acknowledged as anti‑inflammatory, β‑sitosterol as anti‑inflammatory/immunomodulatory, and tannins as astringent—plausibly accounting for the plant’s long‑standing roles in uro‑renal, gastrointestinal, and topical contexts.

Today the bark remains the most common commercial form, and standardized extracts are sold in some markets as diuretic and litholytic remedies. Contemporary reviews and early clinical work highlight ongoing interest in Crataeva as a herbal diuretic and anti‑inflammatory, with traditional decoctions and infusions still in use alongside modern preparations.
