Kadsura coccinea, known in Chinese as Zhu Xiang, is a vine whose fruit, bark, and root have been employed in traditional medicine for centuries. Among the Han Chinese, the dried fruit is boiled to make a decoction that is inhaled or drunk to relieve cough and asthma, as recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 edition). In Korea, the bark is macerated in water to produce a tea that is used to treat chronic bronchitis and as a general tonic, according to the Korean Pharmacopoeia (2015). Vietnamese healers have long brewed an infusion of the root to strengthen the spleen and improve digestion, a practice documented in Nguyen et al. (2021).
A simple and safe way to enjoy the benefits of Kadsura coccinea is to make a mild fruit tea. Take 5 g of dried, ripe fruit, place it in a teapot, and pour 250 ml of freshly boiled water over it. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and sip. Drink up to two cups per day. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid this tea, and anyone with a history of liver disease should consult a healthcare professional before use.
The therapeutic effects of Kadsura coccinea are largely attributed to its rich lignan profile. Studies by Li et al. (2018) have identified schisandrin, schisandrin B, and deoxyschisandrin as major constituents of the fruit, while the bark contains similar lignans along with flavonoids.
